The football association of Maldives (FAM) was founded in 1982 as the governing body of football in the Republic of Maldives. The football association under the guidance of Ministry of Youth development and Sports is responsible for all regulatory aspects of the Game of Football in the Maldives. It was in 1984 and 1986 FAM became a member of AFC and FIFA respectively.
Football is the most popular sport in the country and has been in existence for more than 10 years. There had been 32 organized football competitions even before the birth of FAM in 1982. The Sports Section of a Government Department organized these yearly competitions for the football clubs. Few clubs from Male', the capital only participated. Very few clubs from the atolls began to participate in the 1970s.
The year 1979 was the year that the National Football Team to play for the first time in International Competition. This was the Indian Ocean Island Games in Reunion Island. A coach from Sri Lanka trained the National Team.
With formation of FAM and affiliation with FIFA and AFC more organized and systematic planning began. More competitions and more developmental programs were organized. Today much emphasis is given to the development of youth, coaches, referees and other technical staff.
The participation at regional level competitions and at the same time in competitions organized by FIFA and AFC increased rapidly. These competitions include club and National Team level competitions.
With the support from the government, FIFA and AFC football has been progressed and developed. FAM which began in 1982 in a small room with three staff has now its own headquarters with permanent staff and part time staff in the various departments.
Several competitions are organized for the clubs from entire country. Despite very severe defeats at international competitions during the initial stages, FAM continued to work hard for football development. International matches and competitions were administered at home for club and National Team level, to be played in front of the football loving local fans.
Today FAM can be considered as a strong football power in South Asia Region. The proudest moment of football for the country had been the goal less draw at home in front of supporters, with South Korea (the Semifinalists in the 2002 world cup) in the 2006 World Cup Qualifying. Thanks to the Government of Maldives, FIFA and AFC for their continued support. We would also like to thank the sponsors of our competitions too as they are going to be our future partners in football Development.
The Football Association of Maldives has a team, working together with Executive committies with the aim of different effective, efficient professional support for the development of football in the Maldives.
